Specialty (medicine)

A specialist ( also special doctor and area doctor ) is a doctor with a recognized training in a medical specialty.

Specialist may call only one doctor in Germany who has completed a multi-year, currently and in accordance with EU requirements in full-time for at least five years of training and successful completion of a certification examination before a State Medical Association. For duration, training content and recognition of antedating the state medical boards adopt for its own jurisdiction a training order which is based on the (sample ) Weiterbildungsordung the German Medical Association.

In the treatment of a patient in Germany Specialist standard applies, that is, a treatment should be the accepted standard of scientific medicine through a carefully -working specialist. In hospitals where night and weekend service is often done by junior doctors without specialist title, this is ensured by the permanent call a specialist, usually a senior physician.

The acquisition of the title Specialist since 1993 has been a prerequisite for admission to practice as a doctor of the statutory health insurance. Until then, it was possible to settle down as a general practitioner.

In the area of some state medical boards, efforts were made to abolish the general internal medicine as a separate area and instead of primary care activity, the field names interior and general medicine and parallel specialist title for each of the priority designations such as internal medicine and cardiology for cardiology or internal medicine and gastroenterology for introduce the Gastroenterology. Due to a lack of acceptance and the tense situation in the primary care of the rural area but this was partially reversed and the "old" specialist in internal medicine, some with modified training, re-introduced.
