Speeds and feeds

The feed rate is a term used in the production technology. It gives the instantaneous speed of the tool in the feed direction. The size of the feed rate is calculated from the path traveled by the tool or the workpiece in the feed direction in a minute.

Since it can be applied only with difficulty at each processing method, one usually works with the feed size. It is the path in the direction of feed of the workpiece or tool, which is covered per revolution or stroke. The feed is selected according to the capacity of the cutting, the material and the finishing on the desired surface roughness.

  • When rotating the feed is expressed in millimeters per revolution of the workpiece, as such always is an equally thick tension at different workpiece diameters.
  • As the tools for milling often have many concurrent operation of cutting, the tool feed per minute is calculated (mm / min) here as needed with the feed per tooth of the tool rotation per minute ( 1/min).
  • When grinding the feed can vary greatly. The longitudinal grinding, it is important, however, that the feed rate per revolution of the grinding wheel does not exceed the width of the disc, otherwise unmachined surfaces remain.
  • Do not feed it are the rooms, because here the feed is integrated into the broach, it is expected only with the cutting speed.
