The community Spellenberg is a member municipality and seat of Samtgemeinde Spellenberg in the Emsland district, in Lower Saxony. The community has about 9,000 inhabitants and an area of 34.20 km ².

Geography

Location

Spellenberg is located in the south of the district Emsland immediately north of the border to the North Rhine -Westphalia. Through the community's Speller Aa flows. Around 3 km southwest takes you past a section of the Dortmund- Ems Canal at Spellenberg.

History

Spellenberg was 890 as Spinoloha (spindle tree forest ) in the lifting tab of the monastery becoming first mentioned in documents as part of the Venkigaus. Spellenberg belonged in the Middle Ages to the County of Tecklenburg. After the defeat of Tecklenburg counts in the Smalcald War Spellenberg 1548 a part of the County of Lingen. Under King Frederick I Spellenberg in 1702 a part of Prussia. After the French occupation under Napoleon Spellenberg came in 1815 to the Kingdom of Hanover.

As part of local government reform in the united community Spellenberg together with Schapen and Lünne forms since March 1, 1974, the velvet municipality Spellenberg.

In the last 40 years, the population has quadrupled ( 1961: 2,290 to 8,403 inhabitants in 2005).

Honorary Citizen of the Municipality Spellenberg are the entrepreneur Karl Rekers and Bernard Krone.

Incorporations

On January 1, 1971, the municipalities Varenrode and Venhaus lost their political independence and came to the new unified community Spellenberg.

Districts

Varenrode

Varenrode (old: Farnrodun 890, Farnrotha, Pharanrodun 1000) is an approximately 500 inhabitants counting part of the velvet municipality. The place is similar Spellenberg first mentioned in the year 890 in Werden register as part of the Venkigaus. The qualifier has been by H. Abels either of far = sheep or rather derive from föhr = pine, therefore, means pine clearing. Ecclesiastically the place of the Catholic parish Lünne is assigned. The place has no own industry, the majority of residents work in the neighboring Spellenberg or other surrounding communities.

Venhaus

The place Venhaus located in the southern Emsland. Adjacent to the state of North Rhine -Westphalia in the south, Venhaus extends over an area of ​​about 10 square kilometers. It is drained by the speller Aa. In the West, the federal highway 70 runs through the city to the north. Approximately parallel to the main road passes the Dortmund -Ems Canal with its harbor and the lock Venhaus. In the north east borders the place Spellenberg.

The once politically independent Venhaus since 1971 part of the municipality Spellenberg. In Venhaus live about 1500 inhabitants, with the boundaries between Spellenberg and Venhaus are now fluent. Mayor

Economy and infrastructure

Economy

Spellenberg is dominated by manufacturing industry. Major employers are the company Krone (Agriculture ), Rekers machine and plant construction, the Rekers concrete plant and the company August Storm ( engine repair ). Within the village there are mainly retail and service companies. In the south of Spellenberg there are several commercial areas ( Südfelde and Portland Street ), where commerce and industry have their locations.

Traffic

In the West, the B 70 crosses the municipality. The nearest motorway ( A 30) can be reached via the interchanges Rhine. In the cross of the B 70 of the Dortmund -Ems Canal runs as a federal waterway to the port Spellenberg - Venhaus.

Spellenberg is connected across the railway line Duisburg- Quakenbruck to the railway rail network. The railway line from Spellenberg to Rheine is operated by the Regional Transportation Munsterland in freight transport. The northern extension to Freren, Fuerstenau and Quakenbruck is shut down.

Bus of the transport association Emsland -South there to Rheine, Lingen, Handrup ( - Fuerstenau ) and Freren. Spellenberg is also connected to the night bus offer " night owl ".

Sports

Spellenberg has a university center with a primary school and a secondary school in the town center. In Venhaus is also located a primary school.

Churches

In Spellenberg and Venhaus there is one Catholic Church. A Protestant church and a community house is located in Spellenberg near the town hall.

Fire and Rescue Service

In the town there are two volunteer fire with locations in Spellenberg and Venhaus. The fire department of the fire department Speller was newly built in 2006. In 2007, the first aerial rescue vehicle for the fire was procured. The German Red Cross, which also has two groups of the Youth Red Cross and the German Life Saving Society have local groups in Spellenberg.

Since 2007, in Spellenberg a youth fire brigade, which now consists of 20 members.
