Spijkenisse
( Listen? / I ) Spijkenisse is a city and municipality in the Netherlands. It is located in the province of South Holland on the island Voorne -Putten. It has a total area of 30.23 km ². On January 1, 2013 its population was 72 332. At the city also includes the villages Hekelingen, the Hoek and Beerenplaat.
Location and economic
Spijkenisse is a suburb of Rotterdam. The city is located about 12 km southwest of the city center of Rotterdam, in several land and waterways ( including the Hartel Canal, the river Spui and the Oude Maas ). The train station has not Spijkenisse, but with the Metro Rotterdam can be the center and the main train station of the mass metropolis in 25 - 30 minutes away. Motorists have it a little more difficult, since the mainland from the island is only accessible via two bridges which are in the rush hour at a bottleneck.
In Spijkenisse there are many companies that are mainly active in trade, repairs and other services. The service sector is the supporting economic strength of the community.

History
The area of Spijkenisse was first settled around 2200 BC by hunters of the Neolithic period. The Romans have left traces of their presence. In the city park a Roman tomb was excavated. In the Middle Ages, the village Spijkenisse was built around a dike and a church. By 1900, it remained a small village, whose inhabitants manufactured wooden hoops for barrels. In 1958, the then 3000 souls counting place by the government has been designated as " growth community," and Spijkenisse quickly grew to become a suburb of Rotterdam.
