Spodium

Spodium (also bone ash or bone ash) is a product derived from animal bones salt mixture. The main component is calcium phosphate.

Production

Spodium is made from animal bones or ivory, with the supply of air contained in the bone organic substance is completely burned and nurmehr leaving only the mineral components of bone. Spodium consists to 73-84 % of calcium phosphate, to 9.4 to 10 % of calcium carbonate, about 2-3% of magnesium phosphate and 4% of calcium fluoride and is ground to a white powder.

Spodium was won in a big way in South America, where they used the bones of slaughtered cattle as fuel. The remaining Spodium was shipped to Europe.

Use

Spodium was used for the manufacture of milk glass, white glazes, polishes and cleaning agents and fertilizers. In part it was also processed into phosphoric acid, phosphorus and superphosphate.

Today, bone ash found in aluminum foundries as a release agent for the protection of transportation channels use. This makes use of that bone ash will not wet by molten metals. Use is bone ash in the production of high-quality ceramic, called Fine Bone China.

In the 19th century Spodium has been prescribed for chronic diarrhea and blood flows.
