Spongano

Spongano is a Southeast Italian municipality ( comune ) with 3747 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Lecce in Puglia. The municipality is situated approximately 41.5 kilometers south-southeast of Lecce in southern Salento.

History

The church gained its importance in 1147 by the destruction of Vaste (now a district of Poggiardo ) by William I of Sicily, after a large part of the city 's population had fled to the surrounding countryside. 1103 the place had already been mentioned by Roger II of Sicily.
