Spongin

Spongin (from Greek Σπόγγος, Spongos = sponge ) is a collagen- like protein, the most sponges ( Porifera ), such as the horn siliceous sponges ( Demospongiae ) forming scaffold fibers. This Sponginfasern network built up from lime and silicates sponge spicules ( spicules ) in mesohyl each other and thus give the sponge its shape and allow through the formation of a channel system the inflow of nutrients. An important role of the spongin at the horn sponges ( Dictyoceratida ) because they can not have spicules and therefore the whole skeleton of spongin is formed.

Calcareous sponges ( Calcarea ) and glass sponges ( Hexactinellida ) have no Sponginfasern and build their structure, therefore, only of limestone and silicate spicules on.
