Sponheim Castle

The Burgsponheim, originally called Spanheim, is the ruin of a derived from the medieval castle spur at 245 m above sea level. NN on the edge of the Hunsrück on the boundary of the local church Burgsponheim in the district of Bad Kreuznach in Rhineland- Palatinate.

Geographical location

The castle is located on a 250 -meter mountain spur that is circled on the south and east by the Ellerbach. Today's castle ruin is supported by the approximately 130 -meter-long tip of the spur.

History

The castle was probably built in the 11th century was first mentioned in 1127 by two records and was expanded even in the 12th century into a magnificent seat of the Counts of Sponheim.

In the 13th century the castle lost importance as the headquarters and is the seat count's Ministerialer.

The existence of a chapel is evidenced by a letter of indulgence from the year 1300.

After the extinction of Sponheim the property passed in 1437 to the Margrave of Baden and the Counts of Veldenz or Count Palatine of the Rhine. You may led an occupation of the castle during the Thirty Years War by Ambrosio Spinola nor to destruction.

Description

The castle was surrounded by a wall of a palace, a round watch-tower, a rectangular massive keep, living fairly aligned with abortion chamber, elaborate window and fireplace. The keep is built with rough stone and dated roughly in the middle of the 12th century. More towers with rough stone found only south of the Nahe.

Others

The Blessed Jutta of Sponheim († 1136 ) and her brother, the Archbishop of Cologne, Hugo von Sponheim († 1137 ), were born at the castle.
