Sport Club do Recife

The Sport Club do Recife, usually simply called sport, is a Brazilian football club from the city of Recife, Pernambuco state. The " Lion of the North East" ( Leão do Nordeste ), as the club is often referred to, played after the descent since 2013 in the Série B, the second division in Brazil. As of the 2014 season sports will play again in the Premier League Série A.

History

Sport was launched on 13 May 1905 by Guilherme Fonseca to life. In the same year, the club played its first match against the English Eleven, a team founded by English immigrants. The game ended 1-1 and Torquato Gonçalves scored the first goal for the young club. 1915 took sport for the first time at the state championship, the Campeonato Pernambucano part. In the final on 16 December 1916, the Sport Club do Recife defeated local rivals Santa Cruz FC 4-1 and won for the first time the provincial championship.

In 1987, won Sport Recife, under coach Émerson Leão, to date only time the national championship, the Campeonato Brasileiro, although the titling very controversial vonstattenging that season. This victory allowed to participate in the Copa Libertadores, but left in the sport as a third party in a group of Guarani FC and Alianza Lima and Universitario Lima Peru.

In the 1990s, the team experienced a downturn, which was marked by ups and downs. 2006 but returned succeeded eventually return to the Série A. In 2011, the team managed to promotion back to the first Brazilian league. However, in the 2012 season the club was relegated as Seventeenth directly from again. In the 2013 season, the football team again managed to promotion back to the Premier League with a dramatic game against Boa Esporte, a team from Minas Gerais, with the result 3 X 2

Stadium

The club plays its home games at the Estádio da Costa Carvalho Adelmar, named after a former club president, which is generally referred to only by its location as Ilha do Retiro. The stadium was inaugurated on July 4, 1937 with the opening match of sports against local rivals Santa Cruz FC. Sports won here 6-5.

The stadium, with its 105m x 78m field has a capacity of 35,000 spectators. The attendance record was set on June 7, 1987. 56 875 spectators saw here the 2-0 success of sports in the game against Porto at the CA State Championship of Pernambuco.

The Ilha do Retiro in 1950 was the venue for the preliminary round game between Chile and the U.S. in the World Cup. After the U.S. in the game before it even had defeated England 1-0, they lost here but Chile 2:5.
