The Springfield Township is located in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania in the United States of America. At the Township include the communities Erdenheim, Oreland, Flourtown and Wyndmoor. A total of 19,533 inhabitants live in the Township according to the census of 2000. The total area of the municipality is according to official figures 17.6 km ², of which 0.15% of water, the rest of the land surface.

History

The Springfield Township was William Penn's gift to his first wife, Maria Springett Penn Gulielma. " Gulielma Maria Penn's Mannor of Springfield " was first mentioned in 1681 on a map and this date is also mentioned in the Township Seal. The first written reference to the Township of " Springfield " is to be found in 1718.

During the 18th century, agriculture was the main source of income in the community, followed immediately by the lime kiln and operation of flour mills. The Wissahickon Creek and three of its tributaries allowed the operation of at least three water-powered mills. In these mills also the name of the later local part Flourtown is probably due (in German " flour city ").
