Sprite (creature)#Water sprite

The term water spirit called a mythological creature that in some indigenous beliefs, legends, fairy tales or mythologies plays a role.

Water spirits are said to roam in water or near water bodies and be counted among the so-called elemental spirits. The Slavs knew two forms of such water spirits: vodyanoi and Rusalka (see Dvořák 's opera Rusalka ). A distinction was made between virgin (eg, the Undine ) and no longer virgin water spirits, but is not further clarified in what way a female water spirit could lose his virginity.

Mermaids (eg sirens, Rhine daughters, Lorelei ), Mermaids (eg Melusine, Undine ), water women (eg Nereids, Oceanids ) water nymphs (eg Anguana, naiads, Salmacis ) and Mermen ( eg Nix, Ekkehard Nekkepenn, Kelpies ) can also be counted among the water spirits.

In Tibetan Buddhism and Bön this class of spirits is also called Nagas or Lu.
