Spyro Gyra

Spyro Gyra is an American jazz fusion band. It was founded in the early 1970s by saxophonist Jay Beckenstein (* 1951) and keyboardist Jeremy Wall in Buffalo.

With over 20 albums and sold more than ten million records sold Spyro Gyra are among the most prolific and commercially successful bands in the history of jazz. Between 1980 and 1985 the band was awarded seven Grammys.

History

The band was born from jam sessions of musicians in Buffalo, New York, some of which knew each other from high school and some had a rhythm and blues background. The name originated from a joke - the club owners urged and pelvic stone dug a type of algae Spirogyra, in English often referred to as Schraubenalge, from his memory, he knew from the biology classes. Among the early members included alongside Beck and Stone Wall ( but from 1978 no longer belonged to the live band ) and others Tom Schuman (keyboards), the guitarist Freddy Rapillo and Rick Strauss, and the drummer Tom Duffy and Ted Reinhardt. By 1994, Dave Samuels was the Caribbean flair brought on the marimba, often as a guest. Their first record was released in 1978 ( Spyro Gira ) with their hit Shaker Song. The breakthrough they had with the follow up album Morning Dance and the eponymous hit single, released in 1979 ( it reached platinum status).
