Spyros Kyprianou

Spyros Kyprianou, Greek Σπύρος Κυπριανού ( born October 28, 1932 in Limassol, † March 12, 2002 in Nicosia; pronounced Spiros Kiprianú, last endbetont ) was a Greek- Cypriot politician and 1977-1988 President of the Republic of Cyprus.

He married Mimi Pagathrokliton in 1956, they had two sons, including Marcos Kyprianou, until he was replaced in March 2008 by Androulla Vassiliou, EU Health Commissioner was.

As a foster child of his mentor Archbishop Makarios - the first President of the Republic of Cyprus - he was just 28 years defense minister of the country. From August 16 1960 to June 15, 1972, he was Foreign Minister of Cyprus.

To him, the biggest sporting arena in Cyprus was named after him in honor, the Spyros Kyprianou Athletic Center.
