Squalidae

Dogfish ( Squalus acanthias )

The family of spiny dogfish ( Squalidae ) is a global, distributed in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean. They live both in cool, as well as in tropical seas and keep on especially on the shelf areas of continents and islands and seamounts. The best-known representative is the spiny dogfish ( Squalus acanthias ), which is also found in the North Sea and the Mediterranean.

Common to all spiny dogfish is the absence of the anal fin, a feature which they have in common with the angel sharks and the Sägehaien. In front of both dorsal fins is ever an unnotched sting. The tail fins stem bears lateral keels. Spiny dogfish are between 50 centimeters and 1.20 meters long.

All spiny dogfish are ovoviviparous, that is, the embryos hatch in the womb from their egg capsules and develop in the uterus region to birth size and are then born alive. It also speaks of " aplazentaler Viviparie ".
