Squam Lake

The Squam Lake is a lake northwest of the much larger Lake Winnipesaukee in the center of the U.S. state of New Hampshire.

Located just south of the White Mountains at the contact point of Grafton County, Carroll County and Belknap County. The largest town on its banks is Holderness.

Its area is 27.5 km ² and its maximum extension 11.3 km in length and 7.4 km in width. The Squam Lake is the second largest lake located entirely in New Hampshire.

The Squam Lake drained through a short natural runoff in the Little Squam Lake and then through a dam at the head of the Squam River at Ashland in the Pemigewasset River.

His original name was Keeseenunknipee what, the lake of geese in the highlands ' meant and was shortened by white settlers around the year 1779 to around Casumpa or Kusumpy. In the early years of the 19th century, the lake was given a different name in the language of the Abenaki, Asquam, the 'water' meant.
