Square (algebra)

In arithmetic we mean by the square of a number one term ( arithmetic expression), which expresses the multiplying this number by itself. The calculation of such a square is called according to squaring. As a symbol of the square of a number is a superscript two will be used.

Example: " 5 (for ) square " or " 5 high 2 "

The term " square " is derived from the geometry: A square in the geometric sense is a quadrilateral with four equal sides and four right angles. The area of such a square is calculated by multiplying the side length with itself

The square of a number is a special case of a power, namely with a power exponent 2

The squares of the natural numbers called square numbers:

However, it also squares of arbitrary real or even complex numbers can be formed. More generally, can the square term on all multiplicatively written inner two digit shortcuts apply, for example, the multiplication of matrices.

The function that assigns each real number its square, ie, quadratic function and belongs to the quadratic functions. Your graph is the so-called normal parabola. The inverse function of the restricted to non-negative real numbers square function is the ( square ) root function that assigns to each number its square root.

Properties

  • For properties of the square of natural numbers see square.
  • The square of a negative number always yields the square of the (positive) counter number:

Keyboard

On the German PC keyboard the ² character is the third assignment on the 2 key and can be entered using the Alt- Gr key. Often you can use the two keys Ctrl and Alt and Alt Gr instead. When an Apple keyboard, however, there is no defined keyboard shortcut for the square character.
