History

Prior to the full membership

Cricket in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, goes back a long time. The first club, the Colombo Cricket Club, wore games from 1833. International matches were initially performed only by traveling against teams like England and Australia, the first took place in 1882. The first first-class match was played against the MCC in 1927 in Colombo. The first one-day match then took place during the Cricket World Cup 1975. There, the team was eliminated in the first round. Since it did not have test status had to qualify for the next World Cup, which succeeded in 1979 by winning the ICC Trophy. In the following tournament, the team also resigned again in the first round of, but managed a victory against India. Not least because in 1981 decided Sri Lanka concede full membership.

The young nation test

The first test match was in 1982 against England in Colombo instead and they lost 7 wickets. After the next four Test matches were also lost in the same year, a part of the team sat down to a Rebel Tour from South Africa. The South African team was banned internationally due to the apartheid policy and so this tour caused a scandal. All participating players of Arosa Sri Lanka mentioned teams, including the first test captain of Sri Lanka Bandula Warnapura were excluded from any cricket and her career was thus completed. This made it initially difficult for the team to earn achievements. The first test match victory was achieved in 1985, when it was able to prevail against India. Even otherwise, the first years were marked primarily by draws and defeats in test matches. At the World Championships in 1983, 1987 and 1992, Sri Lanka failed then each also clear in the first round. In the 1996 edition of the tournament was partly held in Sri Lanka. Australia and the West Indies refused to play for safety in Colombo against Sri Lanka and the other preliminary round games could help the team win in the first round. After a quarter-final win against England semi-final against India was canceled due to crowd disturbances that began when India lost many wickets in a short period of time. The final was then won against Australia by 7 wickets, which meant the first world title for Sri Lanka.

After establishment

After winning the World Cup in 1996 and the test match was constant. In the 1999 World Cup but the team retired again in the first round. In the Champions Trophy 2002, the team was able to share the victory with India, as the final set due to rains twice, but could not be played in full. Even in the World Cup a year later they again reached the semi-finals before being eliminated against Australia. This good result in one- day cricket could be even improved than one four years later at the Cricket World Cup 2007 even into the final collection. In the newly established World Cup Twenty20 cricket you had a hard time at first. A excrete in the Super 6 in 2007, followed but a second place finish in 2009 and a semi-final appearance in 2010. During the World Cup in 2011 then you could see the second place once again repeat what 2012 ICC World Twenty20 similar success with the.
