Şırnak Province

Şırnak (Kurdish Şirnex ) is a province of Turkey on the border of Iraq and Syria. The capital is also called Şırnak. The province is bordered on the north by Siirt and Van, Hakkari and on the east by the west to Mardin. It has an area of ​​7172 km ² and is on average 1400 m high.

Important rivers are the Tigris, the Hezil, the Çağlayan and Kizilsu, where Kizilsu, Hezil and Khabur flow into the Tigris. The most important mountains are the Cudi with 2089 m, the Gabar, the Namaz and Altın Mountains.

The total population was 416 001 people in 2007. The province is inhabited by Kurds.

Etymology

  • The name is supposedly derived from the Şırnak very word -i Nuh, what translated means city of Noah. This then was Şerneh and Şırnak. The Cudi mountain valid according to the Quran as Anlegeort Noah's ark.
