Srpska Crnja

Srpska Crnja ( Serbian Cyrillic Српска Црња, German -Serbian Zerne ) is a village in the municipality of Nova Crnja in the Serbian Banat District Srednji. It is situated in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina in Serbia directly on the border with Romania. The town has 4,283 inhabitants ( 2002). The population is predominantly Serbian.

Geography

Srpska Crnja is located about 160 kilometers north of Belgrade, 90 km northeast of Novi Sad, about 1.5 km from the border with Romania. The place is out on a limb surrounded by agricultural fields used for agricultural purposes, as the region has achieved very fertile soil. Thus, the main source of income of the inhabitants is agriculture. The area is very flat in this part of the region of Banat. The village lies at an altitude of 72 meters above sea level. There is moderate continental climate.

History

Srpska Crnja is mentioned for the first time in 1373. At that time still under the name of Corna. The name means roughly Serbian Srpska Crnja blackness. The town developed over the centuries probably for several reasons settlement. Some who have remained known, Corna, Crna greda, Crno Selište and Rokos. 1775, the Orthodox Church was completed in place.

Personalities

The famous artist, writer and teacher Đura Jakšić was born in Srpska Crnja. He is in honor of a museum in the town.
