The RMS Oronsay (II ), later only Oronsay was a 1951 put into service passenger ship in the British shipping company Orient Steam Navigation Company, which was used in passenger, mail and freight from the UK to Australia. In 1975, the steamer was scrapped in Kaohsiung.

History

Construction

It was built to Oronsay at the shipyard Vickers Armstrong in Barrow-in -Furness. She was a sister ship of the 1948 -built Orcades. Keel-laying and construction were in 1949. According to the ship's christening by A. Anderson, the wife of the CEO of the shipping company, the launching of the new building took place on June 30, 1950. On the morning of 28 October the same year, a fire broke out in the insulation of the cargo space of point 2. The fire fighting lasted three days and the ship was due to the large amounts of water seeping extinguishing an adverse list of 20 degrees. To prevent capsizing, holes were cut into the hull of the vessel, which allowed flow of the extinguishing water. Due to the fire damage, the completion of the Oronsay to around two months delayed. After the end of construction, the test drives were carried out on the Clyde on 29 and 30 April 1951 in which the new ship reached a top speed of 23.23 knots.

Use

On 3 May 1951, the final ship in Tilbury to the Orient Line was delivered. As RMS Oronsay the ship began on May 16, under the command of Captain Shurrock its maiden voyage to Australia. After stopovers in Fremantle, Adelaide and Melbourne, the ship arrived in Sydney on June 18., Designed by Brian O'Rourke interior was described as particularly successful.

1960 took over P & O Orient Line, after which they took the ship out of the line service. By 1964, the ship still led the traditional colors of the Orient Line, then it got a white outboard paint. Around ten more years the Oronsay was operated as a cruise ship. Beginning in October 1975 joined the ship from Hong Kong his last trip to the ship terminators Nan Feng Steel Enterprise Company in Kaohsiung, where it arrived on the 7th of the month to cancel.
