SsangYong Motor Company

SsangYong Motor (Korean: ssangyong - Twin Dragon ) is the fourth largest South Korean automobile manufacturer. Since 2011 he is majority- owned by the Indian Mahindra & Mahindra Limited.

Company History

The company was founded in January 1954 as manufactured Ha Dong- hwan Motor Workshop, the jeeps for the United States Army. 1963 merged this company with the Dongbang Motor Co., Ltd., founded in 1962. to Ha Dong -hwan Motor Co., Ltd.. By Bus " H7H R-66 " launched in 1966, the export business.

1974 was founded with Shinjin engine joint venture Shinjin Jeep Motor Co.. From 1976, Ha Dong- hwan built special vehicles. After the company was renamed Dong- A Motor in 1977, it took over the end of 1984 the competitors Shinjin, who had himself been renamed Geohwa Co.. Already in 1983 he had taken over the model name Korando of the jeeps of Shinjin.

In November 1986, the SsangYong Group got into the company, took over the British special vehicles manufacturer Panther Westwinds and the company name changed again in SsangYong Motor.

1991, a technology partnership was agreed with Mercedes Benz, which extended over several agreements and in January 1993 led to a 5 % stake. There were agreements on the development of vans ( February 1991), gasoline engines ( October 1992 ), coaches ( February 1993) and diesel engines ( November 1993).

1997 Daewoo Motors bought finally the majority of shares in the company, which SsangYong vehicles and therefore Mercedes -Benz replicas as identical models under the brand name Daewoo (badge engineering) were offered. Sold as early as 2000 Daewoo SsangYong because the conglomerate ( chaebol korean. ) ran into financial problems themselves. End of October 2004 finally took the Chinese automobile manufacturer SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation ) 48.9 % stake in SsangYong Motors Company.

January 9, 2009 bankruptcy protection for SsangYong upon request to the Seoul District Court. Four days later, production was temporarily suspended because the company because of illiquidity could no longer pay the suppliers. On February 5, the production in the works Pyeongtaek and Changwon, however, was resumed.

The Indian Mahindra & Mahindra Limited announced on 23 August 2010 that it has to have submitted a Memorandum of Understanding to acquire the majority of SsangYong Motor Company. In February 2011, the transaction was completed.
