St Francis Xavier Church, Dresden

The Catholic Church of St. Francis Xavier (also Catholic parish church in Dresden -Neustadt ) was a building in Dresden- Neustadt, which suffered severe fire damage in World War II and was demolished afterwards.

Architectural history, location

The church was built in 1852-1853 after a design by the architect Heinrich Hermann Bothen (1814-1878) and under the direction of architect Ludwig Theodor Choulant ( 1827-1900 ). Bishop Ludwig Forwerk dedicated the building on December 8, 1855.

The required land for the building was located immediately south of Albert Square in the New Town area of the former fortifications on the former Black Thor as unused space. Today this place is called Jorge Gomondai Square and is located in the acute angle between the main street and Albert street. The royal state government had provided without charge to the surface for the construction of the church. The construction costs are estimated at 150,000 marks.

The land remained undeveloped after the destruction of the Church.

Architecture, equipment

Community

After the destruction of their church on the main road, 13-14. February 1945 moved into the parish of St. Francis Xavier in May of the same year as the new home of the Catholic part of the garrison church of St. Martin in the Albert City.
