St Joseph's Church, Zabrze

The St. Joseph's Church in Zabrze ( German: Hindenburg OS) is a Roman Catholic church in the modern style. The Expressionist building with brick façade, was built in 1930-1931 according to the plans of the German architect and church builder Dominic Böhm ( 1880-1955 ). History

The construction of the church began on 4 August 1930 with the first sod. On 31 August 1930, the foundation stone was laid. In 1931, founded the Church of St. Joseph, which took over some of the duties of the municipality Andreas Hindenburg and the St. Joseph's Church was completed in December 1931. On September 4, 1932, the Church by Cardinal Adolf Bertram ( 1859-1945 ) of Breslau was solemnly consecrated.

Architecture

The entrance of the church with its two arches and twelve other arches to represent the heaven's gate " Porta Sacra ". On the east side of the church the church tower was built, which has 40 arched windows. The 40 windows are symbolic of the 40-year wilderness journey of the Israelites to Canaan.

The church interior is 67.5 meters long and 26 meters wide. The presbytery with the altar is raised by two meters. Among them is a chamber with ten arches windows and a miners' band. In it is an altar of Saint Barbara, who was created in the 1930s by miners from coal.

The windows of the sacred building are decorated with different stained glass. One shows three scenes from the scriptures and devoted to the topic Eucharist, another shows the Holy Family and a round window at the entrance is designed as a rosette.
