St Nicolas' Church, Rønne

Today's Nikolai Church (Danish: Sankt Nicolai Kirke ) in Rønne on the Danish island of Bornholm is from 1275 and was completely rebuilt in 1918. It belongs to the diocese of Copenhagen.

History

In 1275 the first small church was built of Rønne. She was only a small summer chapel, while the main church in the parish of St Knud (Danish: Sogn ) Knudsker Sogn stood. The Salomon's chapel stood as additional summer chapel in Hammerknuden. Hammerknuden or Hammeren is called the northern tip of Bornholm. There is also the ruins Hammershus.

From the original foundation wall of St. Nicholas Church from 1275 some meters have been preserved in the northwest corner of today's nave.

Around 1350, a great cultivation on the west side of the church was carried out and the length of the church almost doubled. Part of today's north wall dates from this period. From this time, the baptismal font of the church, a gothic woman door and the consecration cross have been preserved. Under the consecration cross 63 silver coins are walled from the time of the consecration of the church. The baptismal font was made ​​on Gotland in limestone. In the late Middle Ages, the church was enlarged with a new pentagonal choir. The great foundation of the original chancel has been preserved in the north wall of the choir still today.

1550 was built at the west end of a church tower, which was rebuilt in 1699.

A Pesttafel (around 1600) is now in the Museum of Bornholm.

In order to increase the space in the church, galleries were built, which were intended for the children and the servants. The Pax'sche gallery with pictures of the Passion of Jesus has been preserved. Pax was the name of the founder, who originally Michel Nielsen said. He was born in Rønne and emigrated to Pomerania. There he worked on a farm up and married after the death of Squire 's widow, where he also took over the name of the deceased Squire Pax of the goods. He donated 1721 Pax'sche gallery. She was originally attached to the pulpit on the north wall and reserved the most distinguished citizens of the city.

Otherwise, the late medieval church remained unchanged until 1797.

Today's north wing was built in 1797. 1915-1918 was the major reconstruction of the church, the church was widened by two meters. The present church building was inaugurated on 26 May 1918. Another restoration took place from 1982 to 1983, while the floor with Paradisbakke granite ( Paradisbakke - migmatite ) was lined.

Modern Times

When major renovation of the church from 1915 to 1918 a wooden altar with carvings of Bornholm woodcarver Christian Koefoed ( 1882-1958 ) was erected. In the nave, a model of the frigate " Dannebrog " from 1873 hangs. A smaller model ship, the " Thetis ", named after the sea nymph Thetis from Greek mythology, is a gift from the year 1969. The large chandelier in the church was made in 1620 in Lübeck.

Organ

Your first organ was the church in 1638 as a gift of brothers and Lars Jeppe Hansen and until 1806 was in use. Bells
