St Paul's Church, Birmingham

St Paul 's Church is a church of the Church of England, which, located on the Georgian St Paul's Square in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham, England.

History

The Grade I classified as Grade II listed church was designed by Roger Eykyn from Wolverhampton. Construction began in 1777 on the land of the estate Newhall, which was provided by its owner Charles Colmore. The blessing of St Paul 's Church was 1779th The church was used by manufacturers and dealers who acquired their own seats in the church. Among them were Matthew Boulton and James Watt.

The rectangular plan of the church is similar to that of St. Martin-in -the-Fields Church in London. The church tower was built by Francis Goodwin in 1823.

Equipment

East Window

The East Window shows an enameled glass painting, which was created in 1791 by Francis Eginton. The window is one of the most famous works Egintons and provides an implementation of a 1786 triptych painted by Benjamin West on glass dar. It shows the Conversion of Paul. The original of the altarpiece of John West is now in the Dallas Museum of Art in the United States.

Organ

In the church concerts are often held due to the particular acoustics, including the held monthly organ recital "Thursday Live" the organist Paul Carr.

The first documented organ in St Paul 's Church was built in 1830 by James Bishop. It was located on the gallery on the west side of the church. Banfield enlarged the organ in 1838 and built a new swell. Bevington and Sons reconditioned and enlarged the organ in 1871 and revised them again 1897. 1927, the instrument by Conacher Sheffield & Co. has been extensively overhauled and put in their current position. To this end, the case has been heavily customized. The wings had to be removed and now serve together with some pew doors as part of the end wall of the north gallery. However, the side towers did not fit into the formation at the foot of the north arcade. Therefore, the entire housing has been increased, so that the brackets of the side towers compensate the formations. Through war and weather damage to the organ in 1953 was in a bad condition. Bells

For its 250th anniversary of St. Martin 's Guild of Church Bell Ringers, a new peal of ten bells was installed and officially taken into use on 25 November 2005. Previously, three bells were used. The bass bell of St Paul 's Church weighs 641 kg.
