St Thomas' Hospital

St Thomas' Hospital is a large NHS hospital in Lambeth, London. The operator is Guy 's & St Thomas ' NHS Foundation Trust, which also operates the Guy 's Hospital. The hospital offers its services since the 12th century for a free account. It was formerly housed in Southwark. From 1860 to 1991, the St Thomas' Hospital was training hospital of the Nightingale School of Nursing, one founded by Florence Nightingale School for the training of nurses.

History

The hospital was first mentioned in 1215 and was named after Thomas Becket. Therefore, it can be presumed that it was founded after the canonization of Becket in 1173. It is also possible that it was at that time only renamed and actually founded in Southwark by Mary Overie 1106.

Today's St Thomas ' Hospital is located in Stangate in the London Borough of Lambeth. It lies on the River Thames, opposite the Palace of Westminster.

The hospital was the site of the apocalyptic horror film 28 Days Later in the year 2002.
