St. Aldhelm's Chapel, St. Aldhelm's Head

The St. Aldhelm 's Chapel (St Aldhelm 's Chapel ) is a Norman chapel on St Alban 's Head in the parish of Worth Matravers on the Isle of Purbeck, in the county of Dorset, on the south coast of England.

The unusual shape and orientation of St Aldhelm 's Chapel suggests that it was first built not as a church, but for a different purpose, such as a watch tower. It is an austere square quarry stone pyramid with a flat roof. The walls are stabilized by many large retaining walls. The portal is highlighted with a double Romanesque arch. The interior is divided by a central pillar, from which emanate the four ribbed vaults.

The chapel is dedicated to St. Aldhelm, Bishop of Sherborne, dedicated, who died in the year 709. It may have been built in the early twelfth century. At the beginning of the 17th century it was abandoned, restored at the end of the 19th century and brought back into liturgical use.

Worth Matravers, the seat of the parish, is a small village about six kilometers west of Swanage and five kilometers south of Corfe. St Aldhelm 's Chapel is about two kilometers from the village center in a low ring wall.
