St. Anger

Occupation

St. Anger is Metallica's eighth regular studio album. It should have appeared on 10 June 2003, but was released because of some files that already circulating on the Internet, even on 5 June.

Genesis

St. Anger was produced by Bob Rock and recorded in Headquarters Studio San Rafael ( California).

The album was recorded in a sense of inner turmoil within the band structure. Bassist Jason Newsted was just left to devote himself Echo Brain. He got up front with James Hetfield each other, the commitment in Newsteds second band did not like. In order to save the band, a psychotherapist was engaged with Phil Towle. Simultaneously, Hetfield went into therapy to get his alcohol abuse under control. The studio work could not begin until the spring of 2002. Of the therapy sessions, the film Some Kind of Monster is.

Since the band at the time of the recordings had no permanent bassist, the four-string was helping out served by producer Bob Rock. As the successor of the former bassist Jason Newsted was chosen in early 2003 Robert Trujillo, who is indeed listed in the CD booklet even as a band member, but is not to listen to St. Anger, but only on the documents accompanying the digipak supplementary DVD with live recordings of various studio sessions which combined the songs of the entire album play.

For the first time in Metallica's career also Kirk Hammett and Lars Ulrich contributed text parts in the album. Bob Rock also took influence on the songs.

Music style

The album is a significant departure from the previous albums, Load and ReLoad. The album is harder and simpler than the two albums, but the band suggests a not the old melodic thrash metal direction they played in the eighties. The sound is produced raw and less burdensome. It is striking, furthermore, that no guitar solos are heard. The songs are indeed long, but it can be found many breaks and tempo changes on the album. Many critics complained about the drum sound, due to the snare drum, the snare strings are not stretched.

"It was the intention, raw sounding. To me it sounds very powerful. We wanted to keep it simple so honest and pure as possible, because that 's just the sound of what we sound like, without all the big production techniques. "

"We wanted it so make it sound as if a band for the first time in the garage comes together. Only that the band Metallica is called. "
