St. Boniface's Church, Bergen

The Church of St. Boniface in Bergen auf Rügen is home to the only Catholic church on the island of Rügen, which includes the Chapel Stella Maris in Binz, the Sacred Heart Church in Garz / Rügen and Mary Star of the Sea belong in Sellin. The municipality is the northernmost of the Archdiocese of Berlin and has about 1700 members.

History

Beginning of the 19th century took the Stralsund pastor Wendelin zinc first pastoral trips to the island of Rügen and held in private homes established Catholics worship. 1863, a mission house was built with a consecrated on 8 September chapel on the outskirts of the city of Bergen. After approval of the establishment of a mission parish by the Prussian state in 1864 Gustav Machai was the first Catholic pastor of Pomerania and he worked until 1869. Besides a parsonage was from 1867 to 1878 is also a Catholic school. In 1871 there were complaints about 700 Catholics.

On 1 July 1910, when the church had become too large for the chapel, it was collected in an independent parish. The former priest Maximilian Kaller - he worked from 1905 to 1917 - collected funds for the neo-Romanesque building, which was completed in 1912. Later Kaller established a daughter church in Garz. After his departure he went to the Berlin St. Michael's Church.

The church is a listed building. In it, is since 2000 a new, single-manual organ with neogothic prospectus. see also
