St. Cecilia, or the Power of Music

The St. Cecilia or the power of the music is a story by Heinrich von Kleist. It was first published in the Berlin evening papers from the 15th and November 16th, 1810, with the dedication " For Taufangebinde for Cecilia M. ". This refers to the Cecilia Müller, the eldest daughter of Adam Müller.

The historical background for the narrative offers a Iconoclasm in the Netherlands, in which radical Calvinists in August 1566 devastated more than 400 churches.

Kleist describes the project of four brothers from Holland to devastate as iconoclasts the Cathedral of Aachen. The narrative is output as Sage, as in the story a miracle that took place in the Aachen Cathedral in the 16th century, is described: in spite of the knowledge of the intention of the iconoclasts, the nuns can not stop them from celebrating the feast of Corpus Christi in the cathedral. The miracle is that the brothers will be charmed by the music so that they desist from their activities and not devastate the church. Swing to the other extreme, because they are extremely religious. When the mother of the four brothers asks later in the abbess, she learns that Sister Antonia, the cantor of the nuns was on this day in front of witnesses to her room.
