History

In the 10th century, Count Arnulf I of Flanders ( † 964 ) had rebuilt from the ground up the old feudal castle in Bruges; the castle was enlarged, surrounded by a high stone wall and completed by a church. The church should receive the relics of St. Donatian of Reims, who had been brought to 870 by monks from Torhout to Bruges.

The church took over the octagonal ground plan of the Aachen Cathedral, which Arnulf presented itself as one of the most powerful princes in this part of Europe and reminded that in the female line descended from Charles the Great. There were a tower and a 16- square ambulatory. The church closed the Castle Square on its northern side.

After the church had been destroyed by a fire in 1184, it was replaced by a Romanesque building, which was rebuilt in the Gothic style at the end of the Middle Ages. In 1559 the diocese of Bruges was founded and where the church is why the cathedral.

During the French Revolution, the cathedral was sold as national property, the works of art contained in the church were distributed, the cathedral itself demolished in the years 1799-1800. In 1834 the diocese of Bruges by Pope Gregory XVI. re-established and this brought the parish church St. Salvator of the new cathedral.
