St. George's Basilica, Malta

The baroque Basilica San Ġorġ (St. George) is located on the Pjazza San Ġorġ south of the marketplace in the capital of Victoria (Rabat ) of the Maltese island of Gozo. It was built in 1672-1678, but severely damaged by an earthquake in 1693 and therefore not consecrated until 1755. The façade was re-clad in 1818.

The church is called due to its magnificent interior as " golden church ". It is completely covered with marble and richly decorated with paintings and statues. For the designs was mainly Vittorio Cassar responsible, the paintings were painted by Giovanni Battista Conti. The main attraction of the church is a statue of St. George. Other artists who have worked at the church are Mattia Preti, Giuseppe Cali, Michele Busuttil, Giuseppe Fenech, Francesco Zahra, Fortunato Venuti, Injazju Cortis, Ramiro Cali ', Filippo Cosimo, Giuseppe D' Arena, Salvatore Bondi ', Roberto Dingli and Stefano Erardi.

1958 San Ġorġ was by Pope Pius XII. for minor basilica raised.
