History

Madras, now Chennai, developed after the founding of Fort St. George by the British East India Company in 1640 as a center of the British colonization of India. This resulted in the city next to an existing Catholic and an Anglican church. After the 1680 completed St. Mary's Church in Fort St. George had become the beginning of the 19th century too small for the growing number of Anglican Christians in the city, it was decided, at the Mount Road (now Anna Salai ), from the Fort St George. St. Thomas Mount to the main road leading to build a new church. This was completed in 1815 and received after Saint George, the patron saint of England and namesake of Fort St. George, the name of St. George 's Church. The church was designed by JL Caldwell, the chief engineer of the British East India Company and built under the aegis of his assistant, Captain Thomas De Havilland. Although already in 1815 Fairs were held in the church, it was not consecrated until January 8, 1816 the Anglican Bishop of Calcutta. 1835 Madras was elevated to a diocese 's and St. George 's Church to the Cathedral, which is why she was henceforth known as St. George 's Cathedral.

Had the Anglican communities in India originally still belongs to the Church of England, in 1930 they were a part of the Church of India, Burma and Ceylon. On September 27, 1947, the southern dioceses of the Church of India, Burma and Ceylon combined with a number of Congregational, Presbyterian, Reformed and Methodist churches for the Church of South India. Place the founding of the Church of South India was the St. George 's Cathedral.
