St. George Illawarra Dragons

Rugby League Football Club

The St George Illawarra Dragons are a professional rugby league team from Australia. They represent the regions of St George and Illawarra. The Saints currently play in the founded in 1998, popular Australian National Rugby League ( NRL). The club grew out of a joint-venture between the St. George Dragons and the Illawarra Steelers and is the only remaining cross - city club in the NRL.

History

Following the Super League mid-1990s was the Illawarra Steelers had to struggle financially and it seemed unlikely that the club can survive the next season. The St. George Dragons submitted a proposal for a merger and financing, in which the renamed St George Illawarra Dragons clubs would play in both Kogarah and Wollongong. Essentially, St George would make the money available, while Illawarra would provide a wider junior and fan base. With the intention of the NRL, the number of teams from 20 to be reduced to 14, with a $ four million incentive and a relaxation of the salary cap in a merger, the Dragons and the Steelers secured their survival through the formation of the first fusion of the league at the 23. September 1998.
