St. John's Church, Bremen

St. Johann is a Roman Catholic Parish Church of Bremen. It was built in the 14th century as a monastery church of the Franciscan Order and is a historical monument since 1973.

History and Architecture

At the site of the present church in the Eastern Old Town, in the Schnoor quarter, the Franciscans built a monastery in 1225, together with the basilica. The monastery grew rapidly and the church soon became too small, so that in 1380 a three-aisled vaulted hall church, took its place. The extra money came mainly from the many Seelenmesse foundations after the plague in Europe, died in the seven thousand Bremer.

During the Reformation, the monastery was closed in 1528 and built the monastery, with the consent of the monks in 1538 Bremen first hospital and madhouse. The church and monastery are used for different purposes; the monastery church was used hospital church and served occasionally Reformed congregations when their churches were renovated or repaired. From 1684 to the worship of the Huguenots and later Belgian faith refugees were held in the church. In the monastery until the mid 17th century was the Bremen hospital. It then acquired the function of a nursing home where Prövener (of stipend ) lived: they were citizens who had secured the payment of a sum of money a permanent right.

As of 1802, only the chorus was used in worship. The nave should be converted into a warehouse. That did not happen due to the Napoleonic occupation of Bremen. The 1806 recognized Catholic community acquired in 1816 on the advice of the council, the church was re-consecrated as a Catholic church after restoration work on 17 October 1823. With the rubble of the demolished in 1834 for reasons of hygiene monastery street level was raised around the church by two meters to avoid flooding; in the church, the floor was raised by three meters. So a generous cellar, which was leased to repay debt and commercially since 1992 contains a crypt was built. The main room of the church looks comparatively low by the elevation of the floor. The conversion of 1822/23 can be seen from the outside, especially below bricked choir windows.

St. John is the only surviving monastic church of the city. From the former Dominican monastery with the Church of St. Catherine's testimony only the Saint Catherine's Passage in the city center, the St. Paul's Monastery on the outskirts of the city has been destroyed in 1546 during military conflicts.

The church building is a very concise representatives of Brick Gothic. All three naves are covered by a single large gable roof. Through this design, the west gable gets its unusual shape and size. It is divided into three levels, which in turn are divided by paired pointed arch trims. The reason for the pointed arch aperture is lined ornamental, plastered the pointed arch fields. In the gable a circular aperture is fitted with a Star of David. The sch is there only since 1878, then the roof was redone and recast the pediment and decorated with a stone cross. The Star of David is there likely to be a fit for the sake of horror vacui. From another, even symbolic importance in the documents, nothing is known. One could, however, so both meanings: The term is David symbol in the Old and the cross a symbol of the New Testament. Both belong together and forms the foundation of the Church.

A tower had the building in accordance with the rules of the order of the Franciscans was not originally on, but the church has a roof turret.
