St. John's Maroon Church

The St. John's Maroon is a Methodist Church in Freetown, capital of Sierra Leone. The church was built around 1820 or 1808 and is considered one of the most important national monuments in the country.

The church was partially destroyed during the civil war in Sierra Leone 1991-2002. It is still used as a house of worship and cultural center and is characterized by its typical form and the white color of a Jamaican church.

History

The founder of the church received a land grant in 1820 by the British royal family between the streets of Liverpool, Percival and Siaka Stevens. The name of the church is on the Maroons, due the first about 550 freed Jamaican slaves who moved to Sierra Leone. The church is located in the Free Towner district Maroon Town.
