St. Joseph's High School, East Timor

The Colégio de São José is a secondary school for 15 - to 18 -year-old in Dili, the capital of East Timor. It is in the district Balide ( Suco Santa Cruz, subdistrict Veracruz ). The school is named after Saint Joseph.

History

The Colégio was separated from the Diocese of Dili in 1983 by the Seminary of Our Lady of Fatima. In 1993 the school was handed over to the Jesuits. 1999, the school had 350 students and 42 teachers. During the riots during the independence referendum in August 1999, the school became a refugee camp 5,000 people sought refuge by. After the crisis only 252 students and four teachers were left. 2003, the school had 280 students again, ten full-time and 16 part-time teachers.
