St. Joseph County (Indiana)

St. Joseph County is a county located in the state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is South Bend.

Geography

The total area of the district is 1,194 square kilometers. Nine square miles of this area consist of water, which are 0.79 percent.

History

Father Jacques Marquette, a Jesuit missionary, was 1671-1675 probably the first Europeans who entered this area. The St. Joseph County was formed on 29 January 1830 and was the fourth largest county in Indiana. The first the county seat was established on the farm of William Brookfield. On September 7, 1831, the county seat was moved to South Bend.

In the census of 2000, there were in the district of 265 559 inhabitants, 100 743 households and 66 792 families. The population density was 224 people per square kilometer.

The ethnic composition was as follows: 82.36 percent White, 11.46 percent African-American, 0.35 percent Native American, 1.34 percent Asian, 0.05 percent Oceanians, 2.48 percent other ethnicities, and 1, 97 percent with two or more races. 4.73 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 100 743 households out of which 32.0 percent of children under the age of 18, 50.0 percent consisted of married couples, 12.4 percent were households with only one female householder, and 33.7 percent were single households.

25.7 percent of the population were younger than 18 years, 11.8 percent were 18-24 years old, 28.0 percent were 25-44 years old, 20.9 percent were 45-64, and 13.6 percent were 65 years and older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females accounted for 93.2 male population; 100 female population over 18 years accounted for 89.8 male inhabitants.
