Sveti Petar (also called " bird island ") is the smaller of the two Black Sea islands, which lie a few kilometers north of Sozopol in Sozopol Bay in the Gulf of Burgas in Bulgaria. With an area of ​​1.5 ha Sveti Petar one of the smaller of the five Black Sea islands of the country. The island is named after the Apostle Peter, who in Bulgarian Sveti Petar ( Bulgarian Свети Петър; translated "Holy Petar " ) is called. Not far is the island of Sveti Ivan.

History

In antiquity, the two islands were still connected and part of the Greek city of Apollonia. Because there is no written evidence, it is presumed that a natural event has divided the former island. For the first time the island Sveti Petar is mentioned in the 19th century. Archaeological excavations in the 1980s have uncovered a chapel from the time of the Bulgarian Revival the remains.

Today, the islands of Sveti Petar and Sveti Ivan are part of a nature reserve; over 70 species of birds nest there. Most are protected and are on the Red List of Bulgaria. On Sveti Petar is also the largest colony of herring gulls in Bulgaria. That is the reason for the nickname of the island - the "Bird Island".
