St. Severin (Keitum)

The Church of St. Severin is an Evangelical Lutheran Church in Westerland on Sylt. It got its name after Severin of Cologne, a bishop from the 4th century. The church is situated away from the town at the highest elevation of Sylt Geest core. At this place was in pre-Christian times a Odinheiligtum. In 1240 the church is first mentioned. Official investigations of historic preservation have shown that the construction of the roof truss of the church can be dated to the year 1216. It is the oldest religious building in Schleswig -Holstein. The present tower was built around 1450 and served until 1603 as a navigation mark. At times it was used as a prison.

Construction

The nave, the significantly narrower choir and the semicircular apse are the oldest parts of the church. They date from the Romanesque period. The brickwork is in the lower range of granite ashlar, about Rhenish tuff and brick was used. Various friezes adorn the walls: Friese stairs are located directly under the eaves of the ship and apse. Among closes when ship a diamond lattice frieze on, in the apse of a double arched frieze. The apse is also divided by pilasters. The roofs of the old parts of the building are covered with lead.

The construction materials and the basic structure can also be found in the smaller neighboring Church of St. Martin in Morsum again.

The later attached, Late Gothic tower sits with his red brick and tiled roof markedly from the older parts from. The long period bricked tower hall was opened in 1981 and now serves as entrance hall.

On the south side a little, also lead- roofed vestibule is added, which is called Kalfaster (Latin cale facere = make warm). It originally served probably as a warm-up room. In 1979 it was converted to the sacristy.

Interior

The ship has two galleries, the west gallery of 1699 and the north gallery of 1724. The north gallery dominates the northern lower pews to the center aisle, while the southern pews are free. Hall tower, nave and chancel are covered flat, the apse has a half-dome vault.
