St. Thomas Island

" Sveti Toma " ( St. Thomas ) or Snake Island (Bulgarian: остров " Свети Тома " / ostrow Sveti Toma, or " Змийски остров " / Zmijski ostrow ) is a Bulgarian island in the Black Sea, 15 km south of Sozopol (8 km crow flies).

It has an area of 3000 square meters, and is the only place in Bulgaria where wild cacti grow. These were commissioned by Tsar Boris III. planted around 1933; to cover a large part of the island.

Sveti Toma is named after the once existing there Sveti Toma - Chapel. In the vernacular, the island is nicknamed Snake Island, as there are many species of snakes are found.
