St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut

St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut (also Sankt Wolfgang ) is a market town with 2825 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in Upper Austria in the district of Gmunden Traun in the district. It lies at the Wolfgangsee in the Salzkammergut and the judicial district of Bad Ischl.

In Germany there with Sankt Wolfgang an eponymous town in the district of Erding. The places are partner communities.

Geography

St. Wolfgang is situated at 548 m altitude in Traun quarter at the foot of the mountain sheep ( since 1893 cog railway up to the 1783m high summit ) on the north bank of 13.5 km ² But or Lake Wolfgang in 539 m above sea level as a health resort. The extension is from north to south 10.5 kilometers, from west to east 8.1 km. The total area is 56.6 km ². 62.4 % of the area is forested, 18.0% of the area is used for agriculture. Quarters are: Aschau, Au, Bürglstein, Digging, market, Mönichsreith, wheel, Rußbach, Schwarzenbach, Weinbach, Windhag, Wirling. St. Wolfgang is separated from its neighboring towns on the lakeshore by larger surveys: the 745 m high Bürgl in Strobl and the 717 m high Falkenstein and the 722 m high Saurüssel towards St. Gilgen. The village is built quite close between the hills and the lake, which St. Wolfgang is a small town charm. The village is bypassed by an approximately 700 m long tunnel under the eastern foothills of the Calvary.

Blazon: Shared by blue and silver; down on green waves a golden Zille, is standing and reaching into the upper field, a boatman with red skirt, black trousers and black hat on his head with both hands a golden helm leader; accompanied on the top right of a golden star. The coat of arms was granted in 1567 by Emperor Maximilian II, after the citizens had asked the abbot of Mondsee in a petition to intervene with the princes of this. History

The village owes its name to the Holy Wolfgang, who sought refuge to 976 as Bishop of Regensburg in his own monastery Mondsee. The monastery was 748 AD by Odilo, the Duke of Bavaria from the family of Agilolfinger been established. In many legends ( Beilwurf source and wonder at the Falkenstein ) of handwritten construction of the first small church on Abersee and associated miraculous healings are mentioned.

After the canonization in 1052 Wolfgang's numerous miracles and healings contributed significantly to the spread and importance of popular piety and Wolfgang cult. The monastery of Mondsee, as the owner of this region presented themselves at the service of the notice and distribution of this rite in and around St. Wolfgang. A first Romanesque church was in 1183 by Pope Lucius III. confirmed. For the year 1291, there are documented reports of pilgrimages to the church in Wolfgang country. 1314-1318 erected a large pilgrim house, which was developed magnificently in the 15th century, as many of the faithful from different countries no longer found in it enough space. Among the abbots Simon Reuchlin, Benedict Eck and Wolfgang Haberl, who established in 1515 the art-historical importance Pilgerbrunnen front of the church, St. Wolfgang experienced a building boom.

The church gained through the centuries, especially by the artistic establishment in importance. The 1481 finished triptych Michael Pacher, the Baroque altar by Thomas Schwanthalerstraße 1676 with the relics of saints Wolfgang and the Man of Sorrows and the pulpit of the Baroque sculptor Meinrad Guggenbichler 1706 make the pilgrimage church at an exceptional piece of art.

The highlight of the pilgrimage was reached in the 15th and 16th centuries, as reflected also in the creation of art. St. Wolfgang to Rome, Aachen and Einsiedeln was the fourth largest pilgrimage of his time. 1506 Emperor Maximilian I acquired the Mondsee ( the basic rule of the pen), and in 1567, Emperor Maximilian II, the place market rights with Coat of Arms.

As part of the Counter-Reformation pilgrimage was again revived. But the importance of the shrine was severely limited by the reforms of Emperor Joseph II; 1791, the monastery Mondsee was completely dissolved.

New revival and a big boost for St. Wolfgang brought to the nearby summer imperial residence in Bad Ischl ( 1829-1916 ). Tourism

St. Wolfgang was in post-war Austria with its surroundings to a known tourist landscape, but lost since the 1990s in importance again. Despite its attractive location in the lakes and wooded landscape Salzkammergut St. Wolfgang no longer is today one of the major tourist towns in Austria. By establishing the Wolfgangsee Tourism Society ( WTS ) 1998, the three villages on the lake, St. Gilgen, Strobl and St. Wolfgang were merged into a marketing unit. However, the negative development of the Wolfgangseeregion could not thereby be prevented. 1990, 1.3 million overnight stays were counted on Lake Wolfgang, in 2012 recorded one 814 251 overnight stays according to the annual report of the WTG. Managing Director of WTG is since its founding Hans Wieser.

St. Wolfgang is the end point of the European Pilgrimage Via Nova, which in Metten ( Lower Bavaria ) and is integrated into the European network of long-distance trails.
