The State Bank of the GDR was the Central Bank of the German Democratic Republic. She went on January 1, 1968 produced by renaming of the German Central Bank and took over many of the same tasks. Tasks

The tasks of the State Bank of the GDR were, inter alia, the responsibility for the payment and control the circulation of money within the GDR, as well as the payments abroad. In addition, managed, bought and sold the bank securities, precious metals, etc. The State Bank was also responsible for the account management of the state institutions and state-owned enterprises. This also included the granting of loans. Furthermore, the State Bank transacted the varieties and foreign exchange transactions for citizens, institutions and businesses. In each of the 15 districts of the GDR, the State Bank had at least one major branch.

GDR citizens who are in possession of DM- varieties (or other freely convertible, Western currencies - referred to in the GDR in general as " value " ), were able to set up " value - entitled account" at the State Bank of the GDR. This account has been 2.5 % p. a bear interest. From 1990 there was also a variant with one - year notice of termination (interest 4.0% p a.). The accounts were basically led to the end of 1989 in East German marks. Dispositions were only possible in the form of checks and forum Mark of the GDR. For approved travel to Western countries, however, were DM 15.00 (or equivalent amount in other Western currencies) are equipped bar per day. In addition, orders for goods via the GENEX Services GmbH gifts were possible. For the GENEX catalog of proof was borrowed in the short term. Citizens of the Federal Republic of Germany could result in so-called non-resident accounts in some branches of the State Bank. These accounts were held in the GDR mark. These accounts were used, inter alia, for the investment of the unused minimum exchange.

Institutional integration

Noteworthy is the special, committed by a law of 19 December 1974 political dependence of the State Bank, whereby the President of the Bank at the same time belonged to the Council of Ministers. The State Bank was organ of the Council of Ministers of the GDR; the central bank chief was bound by instructions.

The State Bank of the GDR was also a member of the International Bank for Economic Cooperation ( IBEC ), founded as Comecon organ in 1957 with headquarters in Moscow. Their cash were transferable ruble and gold reserves.

The Grade II listed neo-classical building of 1889 by the architect Ernst Ludwig Heim at the former Forum Fridericianum ( Bebelplatz ) in which resided the State bank, was until 1945 the headquarters of the Dresdner Bank. This had tried unsuccessfully to return transmission and built their new capital representative office eventually on the Pariser Platz. New owner of the site was a subsidiary of Commerzbank. Now it is the seat of Bankhaus Löbbecke - a subsidiary of MM Warburg & CO (Hamburg ) and their representative office.

The building functioned after 1990 partly as the Berlin head office of the Dresdner Bank, as well as a film set ( "Run Lola Run "). From 2004 it was used as part of the real estate project " OpernCarrée " by the hotelier Sir Rocco Forte luxury hotel "Hotel de Rome " conservation practice rebuilt as part of the hotel chain The Rocco Forte Collection. The house opened on 12 October 2006.
