The rank of Warrant Officer was introduced in 1938 in the Wehrmacht as the highest rank of non-commissioned officers with sword knot. In the Military Branches cavalry, artillery and anti-aircraft guns, the rank name was Staff Sergeant. This rank but also corresponded to the SS Sturmscharführer the Waffen- SS, the SA main squad leader and the staff boatswain of the Navy, not to be confused with the introduced since 1939 Staff Chief Petty Officer.
