Modibo Keïta The Stade ( German Modibo Keïta - Stadium ) is a football stadium with track and field facility in Bamako, the capital of Mali. It is named after Modibo Keïta, former president (1960-1968) of the country. The 35,000 -seat arena is primarily used for football matches, is the venue of AS Real Bamako and sees occasional international matches of the national team of Mali.

Stadium complex

In the stadium there is a floodlight system and a 400 -meter tartan track. These include a gym hall and a hall for basketball, volleyball and handball, which can also be used for film screenings. There are tennis courts, a swimming pool of Olympic dimensions and multiple training and practice facilities.

African Cup of Nations 2002

The stadium was the venue of seven games of the African Cup of Nations 2002. Initially took place here five of six games of the preliminary round Group D, after a quarter -final and semi final match.

Senegal, Egypt, Tunisia and Zambia formed the group D. The games came to a different audience interest. In the quarterfinals, the stadium was sold out with 25,000 spectators who witnessed the defeat of the Congo against Senegal. Three days later, Senegal came again to the semi-finals, beating Nigeria 2-1 in extra time in front of 20,000.

Stampede February 2011

On February 21, 2011 There was a church service on the occasion of the Mawlid Festival to celebrate the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed to a stampede that killed at least three dozen people dead and more than double the number of casualties. On a crowded stadium, many people were crushed to a guard rail after a sermon of a well-known imam when leaving the premises.
