The Stadio Giorgio Ascarelli was a football stadium in the Italian city of Naples in the eponymous province of the Campania Region. From 1930 to 1942 ( from 1964: SSC Napoli ) AC Naples was in the stadium its home games. It was one of eight stages of the World Cup 1934.

History

In 1929, the first president of AC Naples Giorgio Ascarelli, a textile manufacturer from Naples financed the construction of a new stadium for the club in the district of Rione Luzzatti near the train station Napoli Centrale. With the design of the sports facility, the architect Amedeo D' Albora was entrusted. After starting work in August 1929, the completion could already be celebrated in February 1930. Initially, the stadium had seats for 20,000 spectators and was named Stadio Vesuvio. The first game denied on February 16, 1930, the home side of the AC against U.S. Triestina. The official opening took place a week later on February 23 with a match against Juventus (2-2 ) instead. Just a few days after the opening of Giorgio Ascarelli died on March 12, with only 36 years. In commemoration, the venue was named Stadio Giorgio Ascarelli.

In 1934, the stadium became the property of the city and was renamed by the fascist rulers in Stadio Partenopeo because namesake Giorgio Ascarelli was Jewish. For the World Cup 1934, the wooden bleachers were torn down and replaced by concrete ranks. The stadium reached for the conversion of 40,000 spectators. In addition to a second round, the game was played for third place in the stadium in Naples. 1937 Made one a try and granted women free entrance to the stadium. During the Second World War in 1942 of Allied air raids destroyed the stadium.
