The Stadio Nereo Rocco is a football stadium in the Italian city of Trieste in the Friuli- Venezia Giulia. The arena is named after the successful Italian football coach Nereo Rocco, who was born in Trieste.

History

In 1987, plans for a new stadium in Trieste began, as the old venue Stadio Giuseppe Grezar no longer met the requirements of the 1930s. On the site of the old slaughterhouse Valmaura right next to the old stadium was built in the plant for the time of around 32,000 spectators. The striking building consists of four rectangular pitch- lying, covered grandstands; but overall the stadium has a round outer shape. The canopy consists of a steel frame construction and is located at the corners of the stadium on concrete pillars. The costs amounted to ₤ 100 billion ( equivalent to approximately € 51.6 million )

On 18 October 1992 the first game was played in the new stadium. The U.S. Triestina met Vis Pesaro ( 0:1) and the 30,000 spectators granted one free admission to the event. The official inauguration of the stadium was celebrated in April 1993 at the National Football Game Italy vs Estonia.

To comply with stricter regulations in the stadium security, the capacity of the arena fell to currently 28,565 seats.

In December 2009, the city expressed interest in one of the venues for the European football championship 2016 will; for which Italy competed alongside Turkey and France. Finally, the tournament but was awarded to France.
