The Stadio Paolo Mazza is a stadium in the city of Ferrara, Emilia- Romagna, Italy. The municipal stadium is the home ground of the football club SPAL. The venue has a capacity of 19,000 seats, which are exclusive seats and is located in Corso Piave 28, 44121 Ferrara.

History

The sports facility was built in 1928 in the office of the President Ferri by the architect Savonuzzi and inaugurated on 20 September 1928. At the time, the stadium took about four thousand spectators. For promotion to Serie A in 1951, the stadium was extensively renovated and expanded to a capacity of 25,000 spectators. Further alterations were made a short time later, when the west curve was roofed and another grandstand was built. The stadium is the fifth-oldest venue in Italy. With the SPAL the stadium spent 16 seasons in the Serie A ( 1951/52 bis 1963/64 and 1965 / 66-1967 / 68). In the season 2008/ 09 and, until December 2009 also contributed here the team of Associazione Calcio Giacomense of Masi Torello (FE) play their home games in the fourth division Lega Pro Seconda Divisione, because their own stadium Stadio Comunale Benito Villani not suitable for league is. In January 2010, however Giacomense moved to Stadio Savino Bellini to Porto Maggiore. Currently, the Stadio Paolo Mazza serves again as third division stadium for home games of SPAL in the Lega Pro Prima Divisione.

Naming

After the death of Paolo Mazza, the stadium was renamed in his honor in 1982. Mazza led the fortunes of the team as manager of SPAL 1936/37, and from 1939 to 1942. According to the Second World War he was first Sports Director and 1946 President of the team that rose under his leadership in the Serie A, where he spent 16 seasons. He remained President until 1976.
