Geographical location

Barn is located in the upper Mur valley about 16 kilometers west of Murau.

History

The place was in Roman times under the name Graviacae. In the Middle Ages the salt mining and steel production were formative for the place. The municipality barn was built in 1849 /50. Today barn is a summer and Wintertourismusort.

Demographics

The population of barn on the Mur remained largely the same since 1869. The lowest level it reached at the 1900 census, with 965 people, the highest in 1951, when 1,320 were counted.

Religions

The inhabitants belong to the vast majority ( 93.7 %) of the Roman Catholic Church; 2.9% are Protestant. Other religious communities have less than 1% trailer. Without religious beliefs 2.4%.

Barn is seat of a Roman Catholic parish.

Traffic

By barn leads the Murauer Road ( B 97 ) of Predlitz for special occasion. To the south connects a country road over the Flattnitzpass barn with the Carinthian village Glödnitz.

The community is connected through the station barn of Murtalbahn on the railway network.

Established businesses

Barn on the Mur is a bi-seasonal tourist resort with about 17,000 overnight stays. In addition to the construction industry, there is a munitions depot and a training home of the Armed Forces. In 2004, two companies were severely damaged in major fires, are produced in the prefabs an establishment has been rebuilt.
