Stage Door Canteen

Stage Door Canteen is a musical film that was filmed as a production of Sol Lesser Productions and directed by Frank Borzage. Numerous popular actor, bandleader and musician as Tallulah Bankhead, Count Basie, Xavier Cugat, Benny Goodman, Katharine Hepburn, George Jessel, Kay Kyser, Guy Lombardo, Harpo Marx, Freddy Martin, Yehudi Menuhin, Paul Muni, George Raft, Ethel Waters and Johnny Weissmuller had cameo appearances in the film.

Background

The film pays tribute to the eponymous Stage Door Canteen, which was created in New York City as a recreation center for American and Allied military personnel and thereby maintained an entertainment program in which primarily a theater actor occurred, organized by the American Theatre Wing. For filming the original sites in the 44th Street could not be used; therefore the location in New York and in the studios of the RKO Radio Pictures in Culver City was rebuilt. Counterpart to the Stage Door Canteen on the east coast of the USA was the Hollywood Canteen, which was celebrated in the film Hollywood Canteen.

Action

Four young soldiers - Dakota Smith, Tex, California Gilman and Jack Jersey - have a 24 - hour stay in New York, before being phased out for the war effort; they spend the waiting time in the Stage Door Canteen. A number of young women worked as volunteer helpers in the Canteen; this must be the strict rules of the line subject, requiring that they have to act primarily as a friendly partner for waiting for their assignment command soldiers; romantic relationships are strictly forbidden. However, one of the young women in love in a prompt soldiers.

Awards

The written by James V. Monaco and Al Dubin song "We Must not Say Good Bye " received an Oscar nomination in 1944 for Best Song. Another nomination for best soundtrack received Freddie Rich.
